PBS’s NOVA will showcase Tunable’s work with transforming fresh produce quality monitoring with BAMA and ASKO

At Tunable, we are excited to announce that PBS's NOVA series called "Building Stuff “will be featuring our exciting work within fresh produce quality monitoring. Known for exploring scientific and technological advancements, NOVA will showcase our partnership with BAMA and ASKO to improve the quality and sustainability of the fresh produce supply chain. The episode, airing on the Wednesday November 27th 2024 at 9:00 PM EST on PBS, will highlight how our technology helps reduce food waste by detecting early signs of spoilage in fruits and vegetables.

Tackling food waste with technology

Food waste is a major environmental and economic issue, and fruits and vegetables are among the most commonly wasted items. At Tunable, we aim to address this challenge by providing tools that help businesses manage fresh produce more effectively. Our work with BAMA and ASKO demonstrates how gas-sensing technology can help reduce waste, improve product quality, and make fresh produce distribution more sustainable.

How our gas sensing technology works

Our multi-gas analyser detects volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are naturally released by fruits and vegetables. These VOCs provide early indicators of spoilage, allowing our sensors to detect signs of rot and mold before they become visible. The data collected is analyzed by machine learning models, which identify patterns linked to produce freshness. This information can enable BAMA and ASKO to make timely decisions about storage, transport, and distribution, helping to extend shelf life and reduce waste.

By monitoring pallets of fresh produce at distribution centers, our technology seeks to offer real-time insights that can improve logistics and product quality, making fresh produce operations more efficient and sustainable.

Reaching a wider audience with NOVA

Working with the NOVA team has been a great opportunity to give a glimpse of our progress in fresh produce monitoring to a wider audience. It allows us to showcase how our partnership with BAMA and ASKO is helping to address food waste in a practical and impactful way. The episode will give viewers an inside look at the development process and how we use our technology to make fresh produce supply chains more efficient.

The episode “Building Stuff: Change It!” will be made available on NOVA’s YouTube Channel. To watch it live outside of the US a VPN service is needed. Tune in to see how Tunable is contributing to a more sustainable, efficient food supply chain by unlocking valuable insights from gases.
