How gas analysis provides shipowners with valuable data

Per Christian Johnsrud delivered an engaging presentation at the Gastech 2024 Technical & Commercial Conference in Houston on 17th September 2024. Speaking during the Shipping Policy & Regulation section, he highlighted how gas analysers can significantly improve emissions monitoring and enhance LNG carrier CII ratings.

Drawing from his technical paper, "Real-time Gas Analysis for Accurate CII Reporting on LNG Carriers Utilizing Boil-off Gas," Mr. Johnsrud demonstrated how Tunable's natural gas analyser ensures precise CII andEU ETS reporting for LNG carriers.

Both the IMO and EU Commission permit LNG carriers to deduct nitrogen from boil-off gas (BoG) when calculating CII ratings and EU ETS compliance. However, variations in LNG quality and vessel operations make it challenging for shipowners to document the actual BoG composition.

Tunable's natural gas analyser solves this challenge by delivering accurate BoG composition data, enabling shipowners to quantify nitrogen content, verify CII ratings, and optimize EU ETS tax calculations. The technology promotes operational transparency and supports sustainable maritime practices.
