From Estimated to Measured Emissions: New Maritime Validation Project Launched

Lloyd’s Register, Seapeak, Kongsberg Maritime and Tunable have launched a joint development project (JDP) to evaluate the accuracy and regulatory applicability of continuous emissions monitoring on board an LNG carrier.

‍

The project will compare actual CO2 emissions measured continuously by an emissions monitoring system against standard reporting methods based on engine test bed data and default emissions factors. The aim is to generate independent evidence on the accuracy, reliability and benefits of direct emissions measurements under real operating conditions.

‍

The project combines expertise from across the maritime value chain. Lloyd’s Register will act as independent verifier, while Kongsberg Maritime's Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), incorporating Tunable's T2500 Emissions Analyser, will be deployed on board a newly built LNG carrier. Monitoring and data analysis will continue throughout 2027.

Today, most maritime CO2 reporting is based on fuel consumption and standard emissions factors rather than direct measurements. As shipping enters an increasingly data-driven regulatory environment, the industry is seeking greater transparency and confidence in emissions data used by shipowners, charterers and regulators.

For Tunable, the project represents an opportunity to demonstrate how continuous gas measurements can transform invisible gases into valuable data.

"Invisible gases contain valuable information. By delivering continuous emissions measurements from a vessel in operation, this project will help generate evidence and insights that support more transparent and data-driven emissions reporting," says Roar Hernes, Business Development Manager at Tunable.

The project was announced during Gastech 2026 and will contribute valuable knowledge to the ongoing industry discussion around emissions monitoring, reporting and verification in maritime shipping.
