Innovating to reduce CO2 emissions

As the workweek at Tunable draws to a close, we eagerly anticipate the upcoming weekend, which holds special significance as Sunday, January 28th, marks the International Reducing CO2 Emissions Day, a day designated by the United Nations (UN) to promote the development and application of greenhouse gas emission reduction policies.

Embracing the philosophy that what gets measured gets managed, our dedication to this occasion involves a calculation of the CO2 savings potential associated with every instrument our customers integrate into their operations. We are committed to contributing meaningfully to the global effort to reduce carbon emissions, and this weekend provides an opportune moment to reflect on our collective environmental impact.

A staggering 8% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are attributed to food waste and loss, with fruits and vegetables being major contributors. Traditionally, the detection of rot and mold in post-harvest produce is a manual process. However, Tunable's innovative solution offers a more efficient approach. By closely monitoring the quality of packed and stored fruits and vegetables, our technology helps in preventing the spread of spoilage and the distribution of spoiled produce. We aim to enable the industry to accurately predict the shelf life of produce, enabling better prioritization in the supply chain and enhancing the quality of fresh food available in grocery stores. Through these efforts, we estimate that our solution will contribute to an annualCO2 emissions reduction of 800’000 tonnes.

In addressing the necessity of reducing emissions in maritime shipping, our proposal advocates for the direct measurement of emissions, with real-time sharing of this data with the vessels' crew. This approach is designed to empower the crew by providing them with the necessary insights to actively pursue improvements, offering a valuable understanding of emission profiles across different fuels and fuel blends. Moreover, the data obtained through this process will play a key role in identifying optimal maintenance and operational strategies based on emissions data, including considerations such as engine load. In summary, we anticipate that proactive measures will collectively contribute to a reduction of more than 5% in emissions, accompanied by a corresponding 5% fuel consumption saving.

Through the adoption of our innovative Tunable technology, we anticipate a saving potential of >1,5 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This significant ambition is certainly cause for celebration on the 28th of January.
